This talented, red-haired, soft-spoken actor, who debuted as a surfer dude in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), was poised for stardom as the lead character in Back to the Future (1985), but after filming began he was replaced by Michael J. Fox (apparently the producers' first choice, who was initially unavailable). He rebounded with an empathetic performance as the disfigured teen in Mask (1985), but since his real face was never seen, his success in this part didn't lead to audience recognition. He followed in a myriad of projects, including The New Kids (1985), Some Kind of Wonderful, Lionheart (both 1987), Haunted Summer (1988, as Percy Bysshe Shelley), EB> (both 1989) and Memphis Belle (1990). His powerful work as a paraplegic in The Waterdance (1992) signaled a new chapter in his career, and he has since become an invaluable player, usually in supporting roles, and often in small, quirky independent films, two of which he starred in and coproduced, Bodies, Rest & Motion (1993, with his real-life companion Bridget Fonda) and Sleep With Me (1994). In 1994, his range was amply demonstrated in Naked in New York, Killing Zoe, Pulp Fiction and Little Women. Most recently he was featured in Rob Roy and Fluke (both 1995). On stage, Stoltz received a 1989 Tony nomination for an acclaimed revival of "Our Town."
