Clever black comedy about a small-time, cool-as-ice Miami enforcer coming to L. A. on business, hooking up with a slick, grade-Z producer who can fulfill his dream of being connected with the movies. Ingenious plotting, tip-top performances, and some delicious digs at Hollywood are offset by a certain aloofness. Scott Frank scripted from Elmore Leonard's novel. Bette Midler appears unbilled; other famous faces turn up in amusing cameos.
