Slam-bang mix of action and comedy; weary cop Nolte springs Murphy out of the jug for two days to help him catch Murphy's escaped (and really disturbed) partner. Naturally, they hate each other's guts at first, but.... Murphy, in his screen debut, is nothing short of sensational, but so is Nolte in his low-key, raspy way; scene where Murphy terrorizes a redneck bar is the standout. Written by Roger Spottiswoode, Larry Gross, Steven E. de Souza, and Hill. Sequel: ANOTHER 48HRS.
