Reviews
Mine: Some of the best dialog ever written. Sure the plot is a muck, but who cares. Just so much fun to watch. Bogey and Bacall are never better together. A brief clip of this is used in "A Little Romance".
Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: Classic mystery thriller from Raymond Chandler's first novel; detective Philip Marlowe (Bogart) becomes involved with wealthy Bacall and her uncontrollable little sister Vickers. So convoluted even Chandler didn't know who committed one murder, but so incredibly entertaining that no one has ever cared. Powerhouse direction, unforgettable dialogue; script by William Faulkner, Jules Furthman and Leigh Brackett. Pre-release version (shown to Armed Forces overseas in 1945) runs 116m. , with 18m. of scenes reshot or unused in the official release. This version has less of Bogie and Bacall and a more linear plot, but is somehow less exotic and interesting. Also shown in computer-colored version.
